One thing I really want to do is burn a Bible.

Sometimes when I’m lying in bed at night I think about preaching. It sounds stupid, but it’s true. My mind is most creative at night time, and as such I usually think of some of the most controversial things I could, or could not, do (I’m still thinking about the possibility of doing the above).

Why do I want to burn a Bible? Well, the answer is simple, yet also (obviously) needs some explaining.

The WORD of God is alive and active…(Hebrews 4:12)

This means that it is not just a book.

This means that it is not just a collection of sayings, poems, stories and songs.

This means that it is not ‘old’.

This means that the Bible is not dead.

This means that God still speaks to us today.

This means that there should be a response to the WORD of God.

This means the Bible is more than just WORDS.

I always used to think that it was the words that have power - but, it’s not. The Words mean nothing without the One who says them.

Here’s an example, the phrase ‘You’re going to get the job’. If you’ve applied for a job you want and someone says this phrase, it can mean many different things:

  • From a close friend it can mean that they really want you to get the job, and they have confidence in you and your ability.
  • From an acquaintance it could simply mean that they have a conception of that particular job-market such that anyone who applies for that job will get it, and says nothing about you as a person.
  • From someone on the inside of the business it could be a massive booster in ego and confidence - maybe they’ve heard from someone else that you will definitely get the job, maybe it’s just hear-say, but it’s all still positive.
  • From the Boss of the business - it means you’ve actually got the job.

See, it’s not just the words that have power - it’s the one who says them.

With the Bible it’s the same. The reason they have meaning is because the person that said them wasn’t Man, wasn’t some old, crooked, ‘one-too-many-puffs-on-the-peace-pipe’ person, wasn’t an alien, it was God. The creator of the Universe, and everything in it (and even other universes, or dimensions - depending on your understanding of space/time).

So why do I want to burn a Bible?

Reading a Bible won’t do nothing for you. Seriously. In the same way reading any book won’t change your life.

What is needed is a response. What is needed is a relationship.

The WORD of God is special because it is God calling us into relationship with Him, NOW. Not back then, not tomorrow, not in a thousand years, but NOW.

The person that wrote the Bible is still here today, is still alive, and is still writing His story.

He wants us to see Him, and not just a book he wrote. He wants our hearts, not just our reading glasses.

Sometimes we need reminding of this amazingly intimate fact.

And this is why I want to burn a Bible.
